MacConkey agar is a selective and differential medium that is used to isolate and identify gram-negative bacteria from a variety of sources, including clinical, dairy, food, water, pharmaceutical, and industrial. It is particularly useful for isolating the Enterobacteriaceae, a family of gram-negative bacteria that includes many important pathogens. USP recommends the use of MacConkey agar for the performance of Microbial Limit Tests.
