Gliders of Dec 28th

Re: Glider Materials
Today I decided to try
a variety of materials
in glider construction.
First, I built a
"Traditional" foam box
glider. I cut the wing panels
diagonally for maximum size,
but that made one of the
attachment tabs inverted.
I had to re-bend it, then
brace it in place.
I trimmed the wings down
a lot. The tape was sticking
poorly this morning, due to
cold and dampness.
I had to use long pieces
wrapped around so that
the tape would stick to itself.
I used a rather large piece
of foil, folded over on itself
as the nose weight.
Surprisingly, it flew rather well !
The second glider was a
PaperDoll of heavy Tamale
wrapper Aluminum foil.
This floated nicely, but
would deform on impact
with the ground, requiring
reshaping between flights.
I didn't think it would fly
as well as it did.
A well designed plane,
perhaps with foam or
Balsa braces, should
really fly well.
After all, if you shrank
a jetliner down to 10"
the aluminum fuselage
and wings would be
as thin as foil.
The third glider was
from a small pizza box.
I didn't expect much,
but it did fly about 30 feet
in a rather straight path.
Again, with proper wing
and tail sizes, even pizza
box cardboard could make
a good glider.
