Arthroscopic Surgery
Arthroscopic surgery has been increasingly utilized for the treatment of knee and shoulder disorders. The evolution of arthroscopy from diagnostic tool to therapeutic device (Figure 1) has reduced the comorbidity associated with joint replacement surgery and increased patient satisfaction with the procedure.
Prior to the development of arthroscopy, joint surgery required extensive open arthrotomies for exposure and treatment of joint pathology. The longer incisions and arthrotomies increased pain, recovery time and risk of infection or arthrofibrosis.
Innovative new technology now allows for rotator cuff surgery to be performed through small incisions, lessening blood loss and post-operative pain. The surgeon lays small surgical instruments and a tiny camera (arthroscope) between tissue and muscle fibers, allowing the surgeon to view the structures of the rotator cuff.
Joint Replacement
When arthritis reaches a point where non-surgical treatments cannot stop the pain, joint replacement is often an option. It can help restore function to joints and relieve pain by replacing the worn cartilage with a new metal or plastic implant that is made to fit your body.
As you decide whether or not to have joint replacement, it is important to discuss your health and your concerns with your orthopaedic surgeon. He or she will work with you to develop a personalized plan to treat your specific joint condition.
