Hindu University of America offers many courses such as: Vedic Courses, Sanskrit Courses, Vedic Study Courses, Hindu Vedas.
This course focuses on a conceptual overview of the three "schools of Vedantic thought": Advaita, Dvaita and Visistadvaita known as "mata-traya". It covers the whole range of possibilities, with reference to the relationship between the three main entities involved, i.e. Jiva (living beings), Jada (matter) and Ishwara (Lord) as one and the same, i.e. non-dual, (abheda) , or fundamentally and irreconcilably different (bheda) or something in between (visista). All other schools of thought within Hindu thought are ultimately some variation or combination of these three basic perspectives.
This is an advanced level course. however, the basic concepts of Advaita, Visistadvaita and Dvaita will be covered in reasonable detail. A basic knowledge of Sanskrit will be helpful but not essential. Any refere
nce to Sanskrit verses will be explained in English. Since it is a
An 11-week course, it will be difficult to go into a detailed analysis of the Acharya's commentaries on the Upanishads, the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagavad Gita, known as Prasthana-traya. A detailed explanation of these three views may take more than several hundred lecture hours. However, we will deal with the relevant parts of these texts at an introductory level.
After completing this course, students will gain greater clarity about the common misconceptions many people have regarding these three perspectives. By the end of the course, one will be able to conceptually understand these three streams of thought at a reasonable level of depth. Biblical texts such as the Brahma Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads are not given attention. However, the terms will be explained and references to these scriptures will be given with some explanation of how these Acharyas came up with their school of thought. At the end, in 2 or 3 lectures, concepts will be introduced to arrive at some form of reconciliation between the three schools: Advaita, Dvaita and Visistadvaita.
