List of search engines (note kinda opinionated and I haven't tried em all)

Duckduckgo - this is the most vanilla google alt. out there, they even have commercials on TV these days. However, the quality of this engine is excellent, it even has syntaxes like google does. Been my go-to search engine for years. Has a lite version for older computers. If the lite version doesn't work out or you want it even more stripped down there's Frogfind, which is basically duckduckgo without the cruft. Just be aware that Frogfind only does the first page of search results, for some people that's all they need, but for bigger searches it might not be useful.

Qwant - similar privacy focus to duckduckgo, but less features. The design has become recently worse though. The results are still good but the experience is not great.

Margnalia - this is a search engine dedicated to searching non-commercial and smaller websites. This is incredible for finding information on a topic for multiple reasons.

Wiby - similar focus on smaller sites and blogs like Margnalia, but I have found it less accurate overall. Still useful to have around though.

Dogpile and Metacrawler - super old school search engines. Since they've been around for years, they have some interesting results. Nothing too special though.

Mojeek - mojeek is one of the few search engines left that doesn't use results from other search engines, which makes it very unique. I have found it very useful multiple times.

Yacy, Disroot, Spot, and Sear-x - self hosted searches that pretty much search every site under the sun. Yacy is probably more suited for academia than lost media searches, but could still be useful. These sites are the last ones I use for every search deep dive I do.

Old google - old versions of google, however sometimes I haven't spotted too great of a difference between it and modern google, but still worth a look  especially after google has implemented AI.

Ecosia - claims to plant a tree for every search made through it. Pretty decent results.

Metager - another one that claims to be privacy focused, it has an extremely old school interface compared to most search engines, but I've found some good stuff with it.

Brave - an interesting one. It has good and interesting results, but not as many as most websites. Apparently the creator is homophobic though and is pro crypto. Use this either as a last minute choice or not at all.

Lilo - another earth-focused search engine. Similar to ecosia, but it's focused with the ocean instead of trees.

Lycos - SUPER old school, they have mugs and everything. But like I mentioned for other older ones, the age of it makes it have some interesting results!

Search My Site - another indie web/blog focused search engine, not as good as Margnalia but still pretty interesting!

Swisscows - another privacy focused one.

Startpage - I've heard described as "private google". I'm not sure how true that claim is, but it must be pretty good for people to think of it that way. Will block certain VPNs though, but they have instructions on how to bypass that, which is better than most vpn blocking sites.

Yep - a terribly named search engine, but it claims to pay site creators, which is pretty decent.

You - a terribly named AI powered search engine that I only recommend as a last resort.

Bing - is Bing. Probably one of the best reverse image search sites, decent enough for search. You can get rewards from it. It's bing.
