1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Webpage Summarizer (“the Extension,” “we,” “us”) handles information when you install and use the Extension. By using the Extension, you agree to this Policy. If you do not agree, uninstall the Extension and stop using it.

2. Who we are

Webpage Summarizer is developed and published by Yahor Besarab.
For privacy questions, contact: egor.besarabm@gmail.com.

3. Summary (plain language)

  • The Extension creates AI summaries of webpages, YouTube videos (via captions/transcripts when available), PDFs, and selected text.
  • Summaries, notes, history, and settings are stored locally on your device (Chrome storage).
  • To generate summaries and related AI features, relevant page/video/PDF/selection text is sent to our AI proxy (hosted on Railway), which forwards the request to an AI provider (OpenRouter). We do not put the OpenRouter API key inside the Extension package.
  • We do not sell your personal data.
  • We do not require an account to use the current version.
  • You can clear local history and data from the Extension UI and/or by removing the Extension.

4. What the Extension does

Webpage Summarizer may:

  • Detect and extract readable content from the active tab (articles, pages, PDFs where supported)
  • Extract YouTube transcripts/captions when available (including from an open transcript panel)
  • Generate summaries in different styles/templates and lengths
  • Match summary language to the source content (or a language you choose in Settings)
  • Save summary history and optional notes locally
  • Provide a full dashboard view, copy/export/print helpers, and related tools (for example ask-about-page, translate, action items — availability may depend on product settings)
  • Use a keyboard shortcut (e.g. Alt+S) and on-page controls (for example on YouTube)

5. Data we process

5.1 Data stored locally on your device

Depending on use, the Extension may store on your device only:

  • Summary history — title, URL/domain, summary text, style, timestamps, optional notes, and related metadata
  • Settings & preferences — UI language, summary language, default style/length, custom prompt (if used), onboarding flags, and similar local preferences
  • Feature state — for example last opened item id, credit/pro flags if monetization is enabled in a future build
  • Temporary working data needed to show results in the popup/dashboard

This local data stays on your device unless you export/copy it yourself or clear/uninstall the Extension.

5.2 Data sent to our AI proxy (required for AI features)

When you run a summary or another AI action, the Extension sends to our backend proxy (currently a Railway-hosted service such as *.up.railway.app) information needed to fulfill the request, which typically includes:

  • Extracted page text, transcript text, PDF text, or selected text
  • Title/URL context when available
  • Prompt instructions (style, length, language rules)
  • A shared app token used only to authorize Extension → proxy requests (this is not an OpenRouter secret key)

The proxy then calls the AI provider (OpenRouter) to generate the response and returns the result to the Extension.

We use this data only to provide the requested AI output and to operate/secure the proxy (for example basic abuse protection / rate limiting).

5.3 Data we do not intentionally collect

We do not intentionally collect:

  • Payment card details inside the Extension (no checkout is built into the current free build)
  • Precise geolocation
  • Contacts, photos, or unrelated files from your device
  • Advertising profiles for third-party ad networks

6. Permissions (why Chrome asks)

The Extension may request permissions such as:

  • storage — save settings, history, notes locally
  • activeTab / tabs / scripting — read the page you ask to summarize and inject necessary helpers
  • host access — access page content you choose to summarize, and call the AI proxy host
  • contextMenus — summarize from right-click
  • downloads — export files when you choose export/download
  • alarms — local scheduling helpers if used

We use permissions only for Extension functionality.

7. Third-party services

AI requests are processed through:

  1. Our proxy (Railway)
  2. OpenRouter (AI API gateway) and the underlying model provider configured for the Extension

Those providers process request content under their own terms and privacy policies. Do not summarize highly sensitive personal data if you are not comfortable sending that text to AI processing services.

Chrome, Google, and the websites/videos you visit are separate third parties governed by their own policies.

8. Children’s privacy

The Extension is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country). Do not use it if you are under that age.

9. Data retention

  • Local data: retained on your device until you delete history/notes, clear Extension data, or uninstall.
  • Proxy/AI requests: processed to fulfill your request; we do not operate a user account database of your summaries. Technical logs on infrastructure providers (if any) are limited to operations/security and subject to those providers’ retention practices.

10. Your choices

You can:

  • Choose not to use AI features (then page content is not sent to the proxy)
  • Clear history/notes in the Extension
  • Change language/style settings
  • Remove the Extension in Chrome to delete its local Extension storage (subject to Chrome behavior)

11. Security

We take reasonable measures appropriate for a Chrome extension + proxy architecture (including keeping the OpenRouter API key on the server side and rate-limiting proxy use). No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.

12. International processing

Because AI proxying and model providers may operate in different countries, your request content may be processed outside your country of residence.

13. Changes to this Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date will change when we do. Continued use after an update means you accept the revised Policy.
