You don't want anyone having to squeeze between the seats and the wall, or tripping over the rug. It can be a bit stressful with all of the siblings, cousins, and children, as well as friends and family. That's why we created this infographic to assist you in creating a correctly scaled dining room with perfectly positioned dining room furniture as the focal point.
The idea is to leave at least 36 inches of space between the edge of your dining table and the wall or other furniture. Keeping at least 45 inches between your table and the dining room entryway will also prevent bottlenecking throughout supper. To get a "ideal" size, add roughly 2 feet on each side of the dining table when choosing a rug.
Round dining room tables offer a more intimate atmosphere than other designs, making them ideal for family gatherings or dinner parties with your closest friends, when everyone's wine glasses are full. Round tables are also a good choice for kitchens or areas lacking a formal dining room.
A word of warning about round tables: In a big dining room, a huge round table makes it difficult for people to talk across the table. A rectangle or oval table may be a better choice if you prefer to entertain large people. You can even use themes from your living room to replicate the appearance of a favourite accent chair or set of bar stools.
