Chladni

Dear Elon:

I think your tile problem

is related to Chladni

Vibrational nodes.

Violin and good Stringed

Instrument Builders

carefully Tap-tune the

top plate of the instrument.

They know the open strings

have a certain frequency...

They brace and shape

the thickness and stiffness

of the top, to provide a

balanced tonal response.

The lift phase must be

the most critical, with

the enormous thrust

of the engines creating

compression and vibrational

waves of great power,

and broad frequency bands.

An object, or section of

an object, will vibrate

most violently at its

Resonant Frequency...

The Diameter of the

Cylindrical ship will

influence this.

As will the stiffness

of any part of the joined

sections.

Acoustic transducers

inside the skin of the test

ships would give clues

as to what's happening.

Perhaps the WELDS

could be machined

at a slant, increasing

the length of the

stiffened joint,

and changing its

resonant frequency.

The second stage

would have different

frequencies applied.

Re-entry is different,

with the re-entry thrust

pressing the tiles into

the ship,

(barring turbulence...)

Nasa had tile problems too ..
