Let's Close the Zoos

One day, 4-5 years ago, we were passing by the Belgrade Zoo and stopped to watch the animals that were in cages, that were in our field of vision. What we clearly felt then was such a strong sense of desperation of the captured animals, that it is very difficult to describe.

Most of the animals in zoos around the world are born free - in the wildness, which is their natural habitat. And then, one day, a group of homo sapiens captured them and locked them in cages or confined spaces that are visited by other homo sapiens, many of whom insult, frighten and shoot with various objects at the captured animals.

At the end of the day, each of these animals falls asleep dreaming of the wildness and the life they led when they were free, subconsciously hoping that something will happen during the night, something that will change their living conditions, and that tomorrow, when they wake up, they will wake up in the wildness and free.

And depending on the level of intelligence of each of these animals, one morning each of them finally realizes that this will not happen, and that their life will end in a zoo cage. Then their minds fill despair...

With rare exceptions, expecting humans to respect animals in a situation where they do not know how to respect each other, has been carefully studied, but if in the future humanity is to make progress in its relations with animals, one of the first actions should be to gradually close all zoos.

Considering that most zoos are privately owned and have the status of companies/business entities, by passing a law prohibiting the keeping of animals born in the wildness in captivity, they cannot be forcibly taken away from their owners, but independent specialized agencies should assess their total value (land, buildings, animals...), and this value should be paid by the city or state to the owners of the zoos.

After this, small animals should be released into the wildness of the country to which these zoos belong, while large animals, due to excessive transport costs to the country of origin, should be moved to a geographically isolated unit (valley, etc.) of several tens/hundreds of hectares, where they would live freely until their biological death.

If, despite the law, a city or state does not have the money (or interest) to buy zoos, the necessary money will be raised by citizens, animal welfare associations and companies through personal donations, and the acquired zoos - primarily the land, will be transferred to the city or state with the obligation to build on it facilities of general interest: a public park, a swimming pool complex, a sports hall, a public library, a university, a hospital... and so on.

The implementation of this project will be undertaken by the city or state government and the animal welfare society, while the large animals of the animal shelter will be cared for by professors and students of veterinary schools, members of the animal welfare society and a few full-time employees.

In this way, the practice of kidnapping, imprisoning and torturing animals born in the wildnesd would be stopped, because their basic right is to live and moving freely.

The attitude of spiritual consciousness towards animals is this: animals live their lives just like people; they love, suffer, fight and conflict, live a family life, enjoy their young, have aspirations that they want to achieve, of course, at a much lower level of consciousness than we humans, but the similarities are there, right?

For this reason, animals should not be killed or kept in captivity, except when we are forced to defend ourselves from them, to protect property, crops, etc., or in the absence of other types of food (vegetarian-vegan food).

Since capturing animals born in the wildness and keeping them in zoo cages has no objective justification, we ask all persons who read this appeal to initiate legislation in the areas where they live, with the aim of permanently closing zoos, as presented in this channeling.
