Polysomnography: A sleep technologist observes a patient who stays overnight at a specialist clinic during polysomnography. Throughout the night, many functions are assessed, including eye movements, brain and muscle activity, respiratory effort and airflow, blood oxygen levels, body positions and movements, snoring, and heart rate.

Multiple Sleep Latency Test: During daytime , multiple sleep latency testing evaluates how soon someone falls asleep and enters REM sleep. This test is most often used to identify excessive daytime drowsiness caused by narcolepsy or an unexplained cause (idiopathic hypersomnia).

Home Sleep Apnea Testing: Overnight data on a patient's breathing, heart rate, and other factors is collected during home sleep apnea testing. Home testing, however, delivers less information than polysomnography and is not monitored by a technologist.
