On top of Ol' Smokey...
From Chuck Darling
Jan 16, 2025
Ever fight a grass fire..?
Probably not.
I did, back when I was ten.
It was a HOT summer day,
so hot it made your jeans
hot
in the sun.
The fields were tropically humid and
fragrant from the sun-driven evaporation...
Back then, there was no rural
trash pick-up, and so everyone
burned their trash in "burning barrels"
or fireplaces.
A family friend has been
burning garbage behind our
Cottage, in an old,
overgrown, outdoor fireplace
that my Grampa had built.
Ohio Blue-Tip Strike-Anywhere
matches were a novelty,
and
Robbie was more interested in
them, than in watching the fire.
She didn't keep her eye
in the 3 foot tall alfalfa on
the ridge behind the fireplace,
underneath Mr. Al's 40 foot
border pine trees,
at the edge
of the woods surrounding
Cattaraugus Creek...
My Mom and her parents
had driven to town to go
grocery shopping ...
We kids were alone...
Fire !
Robbie alerted her brothers
and me, and we began beating
out the fire with brooms, shovels,
and old mops.
Our water supply was off, due
to leaky external pipes.
Tom, eighteen, turned the water on,
which began to spray from the leaks.
Dave took an old crop sprayer from
the garage, and filled it with water.
Cindy and Char, seven, took pots
from the kitchen, and filled them
from the leaks sprays...
As I beat the 3 foot tall grass down
with a wet broom, the ground smoldered
and smoked.
As soon as I moved from one patch
to another, the charred grass would
suddenly flash into flame again,
all around me.
We had Cindy and Char dump
pots of water on the extinguished
grass.
We stomped the hot grass into
the wet grass with our feet.
Finally, after ten minutes or so,
we got it out..!
Tom said not to tell anyone
that Robbie was watching the fire,
because her Army Sargeant,
Alcoholic dad
would have beaten her.
So, we said nothing.
Well, Gavin...
You didn't cause ALL of
California's mismanagement...
But you
ARE
WATCHING THE FIRE.
Pure Smokey

To be honest it’s my
least
favourite track on Thirty Three and a Third.
I love Beautiful Girl, See Yourself,
Dear One and Crackerbox Palace

As a young elementary school kid,
33 1/3 was a very special album to me.
Now at 58, it still is.
Deep heartfelt appreciation to George.

thank you Lord for giving us
Smokey, pure Smokey.
The song was the second of
Harrison's musical tributes to
American soul singer Smokey Robinson,
following "Ooh Baby (You Know That I Love You)" in 1975.

Lyrics:
Throughout my lifetimes I'd hesitate
I'd feel some joy
But before I'd show my thanks it became too late
But now all the way I want to find the time
Stop and say
I thank you Lord for giving us each new day
And as I think back over so many years
Love that's filled my ears
I got to thank you Lord for giving us Pure Smokey
And anyone who hears - hears that voice so free
He really got a hold on me
And I thank you all for giving to us Smokey - Smokey
Singing it so sweetly
Like no one else could do
Always trying something new
I thank you all for giving us
Pure Smokey

I feel this song is a bit over the top for his love of Smokey Robinson's music and yet this one is a lost classic rock sensational tune if I ever heard one.
Two minds with but a single thought...
