Cannabis concentrates are the fastest-growing product segment in the cannabis market. Concentrates can range from BHO wax to live resin to more processed and terpene-rich extracts. Due to their unrelenting potency, cannabis concentrates are a powerful ingredient in most high-potency edibles.
To create wax edibles, you need to infuse the concentrate in a butter or oil that will be used for cooking. Cooking concentrates is essentially the same as cooking the whole cannabis flower, only without a couple tiny details. How to decarboxylate cannabis concentrates
Similarly, in any cannabis product preparation process to produce edibles, the first thing that you must do is to master decarbing concentrates.
Decarboxylation is easy but the best decarboxylation processes depend on the concentrate you're using. Decarboxylation converts the non-psychoactive acid-form THCa compound into an active THC compound that induces euphoria and cerebral effects.
These are a few things to keep in mind about when you decarb wax:
-
Employ a low and slow decarboxylation method to retain more of its cannabinoids and terpenes.
-
Warm your concentrates slowly for smooth transfer from their jar to decarb surface.
How to decarb wax
Decarbing wax requires a baking sheet or oven pan, parchment paper, and an oven thermometer. Preheat your oven to roughly 200-250º F and place the oven thermometer on the shelf that you will be placing the baking sheet to ensure the temperature.
Line a baking sheet with paper and put your BHO concentrate in the center of the paper. Allow your concentrate to heat up for about 20 to 25 minutes. Just keep an eye on it, so it does not get too hot to ruin the extract.
Once the BHO concentrate is fully dissolved and foaming, it's time to remove it and let it cool for a minute or two.
How to decarb RSO
RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) is a full-spectrum and potent extract. Decarbing RSO requires RSO, large pot, cooking oil (sunflower or canola oil), stirring spoon, tongs and a thermometer. Start by filling cooking oil a quarter of the way in the large pot. Place the glass or silicone container (with RSO in it) in the pot of cooking oil.
Warm the contents of the pot at a medium-low temperature (approximately 200º F), continually discharging the bubbles that appear on the surface. Continually monitor the temperature using your thermometer. The moment that the heat registers 200º F, remove the pot from the heat.
Wait a few minutes until the pot cools down and the bubbles have decreased to remove the concentrate container with your tongs.
How to decarb kief
Kief is literally a cluster of trichome heads and is a solventless cannabis concentrate. Decarb kief by collecting some kief, a baking sheet, parchment paper, a spatula, and an oven thermometer. Heat your oven to about 200º F and verify that the temperature is right using your oven thermometer.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Cover your kief out on the parchment paper in an even layer without spreading a kief cloud. When the temperatures are right, place your baking sheet in the oven and leave it there for about 15 to 20 minutes. Then take out the baking sheet and allow it to cool.
How to make cannabutter from concentrates
Cannabutter is a potent yet adaptable substitute for regular butter. Cannabutter can be used with pasta, baked items, popcorn, coffee and so forth.
Ingredients
To begin, you need about gather the following supplies:
-
One gram of concentrate
-
Waxed paper
-
Oven-safe dish
-
Saucepan
-
Two teaspoons powder or liquid soy lecithin
-
Dabber
-
Lighter or torch
-
Oil or butter
Instructions
Before you combine the concentrate with butter or oil, you'll need to determine the dosage of your potent edible. A gram of concentrate contains anywhere from 60 to 95 percent THC and typically is used per cup of oil or butter. We'll discuss dosing edibles in greater detail in another section below.
-
Decarboxylate your extracts first always.
As mentioned previously, we advise that the cannabis concentrate be decarboxylated in the oven to activate the cannabinoids and prepare them for ingestion. -
Let it cool.
Once decarboxylated, slowly cool the concentrate in the oven for two minutes. After cooling, transfer the concentrate to the freezer for roughly 10 minutes. Freezing the concentrate makes it easier to remove from the parchment paper using a dabber or other scraping device. -
Pour your concentrate into the THC butter
After you scrape the BHO concentrate from the parchment paper, it's time to infuse your concentrate into butter.Warm up the THC butter in a saucepan on low heat until the butter melts or gives off some steam but does not boil. Strain your concentrate with a dabber or other kitchen devices into the warm butter or oil. Slightly warm the device with a lighter or a torch and melt the concentrate into the saucepan. Gently stir the mixture so your concentrates distribute into the butter. In a couple of minutes, your extract is fully integrated and ready to use.
Note: Rather than butter, the majority of cannabis chefs recommend substituting coconut oil due to its fat content. Cannabinoids bind to lipids.
-
Add lecithin options to enhance the effects
Once the concentrate has melted into the mixture, add two teaspoons of lecithin to the butter, if desired. Lecithin is said to enhance the transport of THC into the bloodstream.
How to dose edibles with dabs
Cannabis buds require a lot more material to consume than cannabis concentrate due to the different amounts of potency. You can utilize one ounce of cannabis flower for each pound of butter, but the recipe is altered when using cannabis concentrates.
When dosing with wax edibles, account for the potency of your concentrate. For instance, if you're using 75 percent THC concentrate, you have approximately 750mg of THC per gram. If you're producing about 20 cookies with a gram of BHO concentrate and a cup of butter, a serving would contain about 37.5mg of THC.
How to make edibles with wax
Marijuana concentrate edibles should be eaten carefully, particularly for first-time consumers. Cannabis concentrate edibles are much more potent than flower-based edibles. The typical dose for edibles is 10mg THC in most states. Modify the recipe to your preference.
When consuming cannabis concentrates, beginners should start low and wait 1-2 hours to assess the effects. Don’t take extra doses until you can assess the effects. Increase the dose gradually.
Benefits of utilizing concentrates in edibles
In the old days, you’d simply heat up ground cannabis bud, but now you get to play around with cannabis concentrates. There are numerous benefits of making edibles with concentrates over cannabis flower:
-
Increased intensity – Cannabis concentrates contain high levels of cannabinoids ranging from 90 percent THC to CBD.
-
Less herbal taste – Concentrates remove the grassy flavor. Wax edibles do not have any cannabis smell.
-
Increased convenience – No need to cook a big cannabutter batch. Cannabis oil or concentrate oil can be used for homemade edibles.
-
Flavor your product with ingredients like honey, stews, pies, and more.
Ensure you mark your cannabis edibles to prevent accidental consumption.
