There are many ways to embossing on something. Sometimes we emboss with hand, using hand-held equipment to make an image on the material we are embossing. This method (let’s refer to it as engraving) can create unique designs that cannot be duplicated. This type of embossing is usually used for custom limited art pieces or when purchasing an embossing tool is impossible. Dry and heat embossing techniques are employed for hand embossing , based on how the artist wishes the final product to have perceived.

The other method of embossing involves the use of a stamping die, or roller. The rollers (cylinders) are employed to emboss continuously, like manufacturing PVC film, leather foil, glass, and more using a uniform pattern. The die embosses only one item at a given time, however, it is able to be reused. Both rollers and dies the pattern to be embossed is cut by reverse (mirror) to ensure it is that when the tool gets put on the substrate, the intended pattern will appear in the proper form. In general, a die is intended to be mounted onto the press, and not operated by hand. Both rollers and dies can use heat to increase their effectiveness (weather the heat is applied to the roller or the surface of the objects).
