To be considered a screening test, the test must be sensitive enough to detect the illness in its early stages. It must be particular in order for the test to be positive in the absence of additional criteria. CA-125, an antigen found in ovarian cancer, was considered to be a potential screening tool. CA-125 levels are increased in women with ovarian cancer and are used to monitor tumour growth or regression. It is not sensitive enough to detect ovarian cancer in its early stages, and it may be positive in non-cancerous diseases such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and fibroids.
