IUI refers to the intrauterine insemination of partner or donor sperm (in certain situations) into a woman's womb at the time of ovulation (release of an egg from the ovary). Fertilization (the union of egg and sperm) takes place within the woman's body during this procedure. This is similar to the natural mode of conception.
In IVF (in vitro fertilization), a woman's eggs are retrieved from her body using ultrasound guidance and blended in a laboratory with her husband's (or donor's) sperm. As a result, fertilization and embryo (future baby) creation occur outside of the woman's body. These embryos are immediately placed into the woman's uterus after an appropriate period of 2-5 days.
