Re: Relativity... and Music...

My maternal great-grandfather

Zha Zha was Polish, from the region

called Poznan.

He was a Seventh Son.

The Poznan region is where Karol Wotyla and

Werner von Braun were from.

Zha Zha was "head guard" for

Kaiser Wilhelm I.

Zha Zha didn't like

Kaiser Wilhelm II,

so he moved his family

to America.

My grandfather,

Rev. Bernard Ronald,

(Ronowski)

was Zha Zha's Seventh Son.

Grampa Ronald was a healer.

My Dad was South Buffalo Irish,

Navy WWII USS Rigel,

brought the first Marines to Japan, after repairing the

remaining ships at Pearl Harbor.

My Dad , Charles Allen Darling, married Gloria Ronald in 1954.

That was the first year that

the Church allowed

Protestants to marry Catholics.

1954 was also the year that

my In-Laws came to America.

They too had a "mixed marriage",

Eugenio was Italian Catholic,

and Ruth was German Lutheran.

My children's mom was the

only member of her family

that was born in America...

When my Father-in-Law

Eugenio met His Maker,

his daughter Gina brought

back memories of a hymn

she heard in Pallegio, Italy;

the church where Eugenio

had served as an altar boy

until he was 17.

Gina asked me to

sing it at Eugenio's Funeral Mass.

I wrote down the words,

and wrote chords to the melody.

We had 20 years of family

dinners, Christmases and Easters at Eugenio's home.

Our kids met their cousins

while John & Gina lived

in Depew for two years,

after Reagan closed the

Civil Aeronautics Board...

Grace washed our clothes

in her Mom's washer/dryer,

even after I bought a washer

and a dryer......

A friend at Starbucks

is interested in guitar.

Telling people about

a YouTube link often

doesn't work.

It's too easy to forget,

or mis-spell...

I recommend a one page

folded notebook.

(This image links to a David Bromberg tune...)

Jot down important details,

then transfer them later to a

permanent notebook, or file.

 A small notepad

is an effective way of

bridging the musical

generation gap !

Try it!

This was my Fender Uke.

A ukulele is like a 4 string guitar

pitched at Capo 5.

Everything you learn on a Uke

can be easily learned on guitar.

And Ukes are inexpensive !

I've had four of them !

* The first was a black

Mahalo, that I found on

my birthday in DC...

I gave it to a Minister's son

after I re-strung it Low to High

* The second was a $45 Fender

that I also re-strung.

It was stolen one night in LA.

* The third was a nice cutaway

that my friend Ed Trotta gave

me. It was stolen after a couple

months.

* The fourth was a concert

model, a replacement from Ed.

That one disappeared...

* Ed asked me if I wanted

another one, and I declined

because they keep getting

stolen...

A Mandolin is different.

It's tuned like a violin,

and actually pre-dated the violin.

Mozart used it for composing.

Artistic...too.

And Spiritual.

I am a born-again Catholic.

I photographed this cloud

on July 4th in DC, several years ago.

It's not a cloud.

The Lakota Sioux tribes have

a religious history of a female

spirit that first appears to them

as a cloud.

They call her The White Buffalo Calf Woman .

She taught the tribes how to

live in peace with each other.

Like a Guardian Angel.

Or Mother Nature.

Or a Saint.
