The skill requirements for most positions in the Software Tester occupational group include a skill level equivalent to a bachelor's degree or higher education. In some cases, a formal qualification may be accepted in lieu of vendor certification or five years of related experience. However, on-the-job training and relevant experience may be required in addition to formal education (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).

Candidates must meet a minimum language proficiency level to be eligible for a Software Tester position. This can be demonstrated by achieving a minimum IELTS score of 6 (L, R, W), 7 in speaking and 7 overall, a minimum OET score of B in all sections, a minimum TOEFL iBT score (L:12, R:13, W:21, S:23, and overall L93), or a minimum PTE Academic score of 50 (L, R, W), 65 in speaking, and 65 overall. Exceptions may apply for Australian Graduate exclusions in certain states and territories or when Priority Skilled Lists apply specified conditions. Candidates from the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, or Ireland cannot use IELTS or OET scores as proof of language proficiency.
