If you're decorating for Christmas, you'll want to make sure that your decorations are safe. If you're running Christmas light with extension cords, here are some tips for making sure those cords stay safe:
1. Use LED lights
LED Christmas lights are more energy efficient, last longer and are safer than incandescent bulbs. They also tend to be brighter than other types of bulbs and can be used in more places than traditional lights (you can hang them outside on trees or shrubs). If you're looking for an environmentally friendly option that will save you money on your electricity bill over time, these are the best choice.
2. Connect your strings of lights to a power source using wires.
-
Use a power strip with multiple outlets and plug in all of your strands of Christmas lights into this one location. The more outlets you have on the power strip, the less chance there is that one string will overload another or cause an electrical fire by overheating due to lack of airflow around it.
-
Make sure that there are no loose cords lying around after everything is connected properly; this could cause tripping hazards or even startle someone if they step on one unexpectedly! Also remember not to use extension cords unless absolutely necessary (and even then, only use them temporarily). If possible try running some extra length off each end so that when setting up next year's display it'll be easier since nothing needs moved much at all except maybe turning off any lights attached directly into walls themselves rather than via extension cord(s) attached directly onto those same walls instead."
3. Connect your strings of lights together by connecting the positive ends and negative ends together.
The next step is to connect your strings of lights together by connecting the positive ends and negative ends together. This allows you to connect multiple strings of lights, or even connect multiple strings of lights to a power source.
The positive end of one string should be connected to the negative end of another in order for them both to work properly.
4. Use non-polarized plugs if they are available.
You can also use non-polarized plugs if they are available, as they will work with many different types of sockets. Make sure the plug is firmly connected to the outlet or extension cord before you turn on the switch on the wall or under tables or counters.
If you have a polarized plug and an extension cord with only one prong (or no ground wire), check that there are no exposed metal parts on either end of your extension cord to make sure it's safe for use in your home decorations. You should never force an extension cord into a polarized outlet -- instead, flip it around until it fits securely into place without any need for force!
5. Always check extension cords before you use them.
When checking an extension cord, look for signs of damage, such as fraying around the plug or melted insulation on a wire. If you see any of these things, don't use that extension cord; it's not safe and could cause a fire.
If your Christmas lights are plugged into an outlet with no other appliances plugged into it and they still don't work, try switching out different bulbs in your strand--this will tell you if one bulb is dead or if something else is wrong with your setup (like a loose connection somewhere). If none of this works for you and there's no visible damage to any part of your setup or equipment: call an electrician!
6. Do not place decorations on live wires!
-
Do not hang decorations on live wires, such as trees wrapped in lights, garlands made of lights or other decorations hanging from outlets or power strips because they may cause the Christmas lights to short out and could lead to fire or electrical shock injuries!

If you have any questions about whether your Christmas lighting is safe for use around children and pets, please contact an electrician for advice before using it this holiday season.
