“I had a lot of positive conversations with Chairman Chung Mong-gyu”

Can coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Korea Football Association president Chung Mong-gyu split?

An official from the Korea Football Association responded after Coach Klinsmann's press conference on his return to Korea on the 8th that they had not yet discussed Coach Klinsmann's future internally. They only said that there would be general discussions on the management of the national team, including the Asian Cup, rather than on Coach Klinsmann's future. It was announced that it would be discussed through a meeting led by the National Power Enhancement Committee, led by Michael Müller, Chairman of the National Power Enhancement Committee, and Hwang Bo-gwan, Head of Technology Division.

However, it is unclear whether the National Team Power Strengthening Committee, which has been ineffective since the appointment of Coach Klinsmann, will proceed properly. In February of last year, Michael Müller, chairman of the Association's National Team Strengthening Committee, said at a press conference on the appointment of Coach Klinsmann that there were only two meetings of the National Team Strengthening Committee in the process of selecting the new national team coach.

The last meeting was virtually the notification of the appointment of Manager Klinsmann. This is because the official announcement of Coach Klinsmann's appointment to the national team was made on the day that the National Team Strengthening Committee meeting was held. This was the reason why doubts arose as to whether the opinions of members of the National Team Strengthening Committee were properly reflected in the selection process of Coach Klinsmann. It is highly doubtful whether the National Power Strengthening Committee will be able to function properly now.

Crucially, it is undecided whether Coach Klinsmann, who must personally participate in the National Team Strengthening Committee and listen to the opinions of other experts about the competition and the national team, will attend. An association official said after Coach Klinsmann's press conference on his return home, "The coach will have a meeting with the officials. And the National Team Strengthening Committee is in contact with the members. The time, place, timing and method will be decided soon. “I don’t know yet whether the director will attend the committee or not,” he answered.

Considering Coach Klinsmann's actions to date, it is highly likely that he will not attend the National Team Power Strengthening Committee. He also spoke about his future schedule at a press conference on his return home, saying, "I plan to leave the country around next week. After taking a short break, I will head to Europe to see the current schedules of Lee Kang-in, Son Heung-min, Kim Min-jae and other players and watch their games. “It is planned,” he replied.

There are observations that even if the National Team Power Strengthening Committee, which has been ineffective until now, conducts discussions without Coach Klinsmann, it will not have a significant impact on Coach Klinsmann's future. In the end, it seems to be narrowing down to the fact that whether or not Coach Klinsmann is dismissed depends on the hands of Association President Chung Mong-gyu.

According to Director Klinsmann, the relationship between the two is still good. "I had two meetings with Chairman Chung Mong-gyu locally. While drinking coffee, we talked a lot, especially about the tournament. We also talked about a lot of positive things we saw during the tournament. In the grand scheme of things, it is a tournament, but we analyze each game. "Since we started, we talked a lot about the game. We talked a lot about the bad parts, such as conceding goals, because they are clearly areas that we need to improve on," he explained.

It appears that Coach Klinsmann also spoke to Chairman Chung Mong-gyu about his future blueprint. He said, “We also talked about how we should prepare in the future and how we will prepare for the two-game series against Thailand that is right around the corner.”

Association President Chung Mong-gyu played a decisive role in selecting Director Klinsmann. If you fire Coach Klinsmann with your own hands, it would be like admitting his failure. Attention is focused on whether Association President Chung Mong-gyu, who has already apologized to the entire nation for his decision to pardon 100 soccer players, including match-fixers, will once again admit his mistakes.
