Erik ten Hag could be about to make the wrong signing for Manchester United

Manchester United could be about to give Erik ten Hag more January transfer support.

Manchester United are eyeing a deal for Cody Gakpo when the transfer window reopens in January, according to widespread reports. However, while the Netherlands international possesses talent in abundance, he may not necessarily be what the Red Devils need. And that’s because, like many of

the players at Old Trafford, he’s more of a winger than an established No. 9…

Manchester United are open to strengthening their attack when the transfer window reopens next month, especially following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portugal international arrived in 2021 with high expectations, but after falling out with Erik ten Hag, he went on to criticize the Dutchman and the Glazers in an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.

United had no choice but to terminate Ronaldo’s contract. The 37-year-old isn’t too bothered by the decision, telling Morgan he’s now “free as a bird”.

The Red Devils, however, now need a replacement to fill the void left behind by the 37-year-old’s sudden departure.

And while United have been linked with the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid’s Memphis Depay and Joao Felix respectively, many are encouraging them to pursue Gakpo in the New Year.

On the surface, PSV Eindhoven would be a good signing. He is certainly a player who would set pulses racing around Old Trafford.

Gakpo scored three goals in four games at the World Cup in Qatar, helping lead the Netherlands to the quarter-finals, where Lionel Messi and Argentina lie in wait.

The 23-year-old has also thrived for PSV, scoring nine goals and registering 12 assists from 14 Eredivisie appearances so far this term.

But even though Gakpo can play in the middle, he is still more of a winger. To turn him into a proper center forward will require weeks, possibly months, of intense training.

United are already too well stocked with players better off the pitch than in central areas.

Marcus Rashford has done quite well when used in the middle, but there is a sense that the England international really belongs on the left.

Likewise with Anthony Martial who, throughout his Old Trafford career, has blown hot and cold when used in a No. 9.

Jadon Sancho has occasionally played in the middle for Borussia Dortmund, but like his two United team-mates, he is another winger rather than a natural goalscorer.

And with Erling Haaland marauding in goals left, right and centre, the Red Devils need their own version of the Norway international.

Obviously, signing proven strikers in January is difficult. There is a lack of proven goals at the moment, something United are fully aware of.

While Gakpo has proven he has what it takes to thrive in the Premier League, he may not necessarily be the one United signed for.

Instead, they need a suitable replacement for Ronaldo. Not someone who would rather be a competitor for Rashford and Sancho.

Meanwhile, the Ten Hag have finally broken their silence following Ronaldo’s controversial departure from Old Trafford.

“He’s gone and it’s the past,” said Ten Hag, whose United side are currently in Spain as they look to prepare for the Premier League’s restart.

“Now we look forward and look to the future.”

And when asked about what he looks for in a signing, he said: “We also looked with the football players clearly, that’s the first thing, the capabilities that a player has.Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news,Man Utd transfer news

“The human being behind it is also a big factor, but you can’t underestimate that.

“You need the right characters in the dressing room, not only if you want to win a game, but if you want to win trophies.”
