AGCO Approves Multiple I-Gaming Operators

The number of Internet game operators in Ontario continues to grow as Ontario's Alcohol and Game Commission approves several new brands. The state's legal debut comes a month after the iGaming regulator announced October 31, 2022 as the transition deadline for grey-market companies.

In April 2022, Ontario launched Canada's first private online gambling and sports betting market for third-party companies. This allowed brands that previously operated in the gray market to enter the legitimate market. Currently, the regulatory sector has more than 30 operators running and accepting Internet bets.

In early October, AGCO set the last day of the month as the deadline for the transition period when gray market operators will be legalized. And now regulators have reported that more than 20 operators have left the non-regulatory sector as new standards have been applied. Since then, the Commission has authorized five game brands to join a provincial-run framework.

Registered operators must now obtain an operating agreement with AGCO's subsidiary, iGaming Ontario. One of the soon-to-be-debut operators in the province is Tony Bett, owned by Betson AB, a Baltic Sports Book Company. The company said it had already acquired operator registration by AGCO on December 5, 2022.

Currently, AGCO's registry shows Tony Bet's website, but the platform says it is under maintenance. In the message, the operator says the goal is to come online from the province as soon as possible, and the website will be provided with games and sports betting options that everyone likes. The official transition and release are expected to take place in the coming days.

Previously, the Commission said that the main focus was to transform operators and related suppliers into the legal sector as soon as possible. To this end, regulators have introduced procedures that allow existing operators and game-related providers in unregulated markets to be legalized without significantly disrupting the player base already deployed.

It should also be noted that the province released its second-quarter financial report on the private game market in October, resulting in a significant improvement in its first-quarter performance. From July 1 to September 30, 2022, the local market generated a total betting volume of C$6.04 billion, translating into game revenue of C$267 million or more.

In addition, at the time, 24 operators and 42 game websites were receiving bets online and contributed to the size of the bet in the local market. It also had about 628,000 active user accounts in Q2, a significant improvement from 492,000 active players in Q1. For the second quarter of 2022, the average monthly expenditure per customer for online betters was C$142.
