Paget’s Disease of the Bone: A Brief Guide

Paget’s Disease Introduction

Paget's disease of the bone, also called osteitis deformans, disrupts the normal process of bone remodelling, leading to weak, brittle, and spongy bones. It mainly affects the shin bone, but can also impact the spine, hips, and skull. In normal bones, constant breakdown and rebuilding occur, known as bone remodelling. However, in Paget's disease, this process is irregular, causing imbalances in the rate of old bone resorption and new bone formation. While the exact cause of this irregularity is unknown, it may be due to abnormal osteoclasts, cells responsible for breaking down old bone.
