What is DOT Hot Mixed Asphalt

Kilgore Companies knows that jobs in construction can heat up, more so when using a hot mix asphalt (HMA). It is most often used as flexible pavement primarily due to its practicality.

There are different classifications of hot mix pavements: open-graded hot mix asphalt, stone matrix mixes, and dense-graded mixes. Hot mix asphalt or blacktop, asphalt concrete, hot mix, and asphalt. What is in HMA? The asphalt contains sand and approximately 95% stone or gravel cemented together by asphalt cement, a crude oil byproduct.

After the blacktop has been mixed, it is loaded into the dump trucks and taken to the road construction site. The hot mix asphalt is dumped at the front of the paving machines by the construction vehicles. The asphalt is poured out and compacted with a large roller. The road roller operator lays down and evenly spreads the ultra-thin layer of hot asphalt. Traffic is allowed to drive on the pavement once the new layer has cooled. The results are a smoother surface.

What is HMA Ultra-Thin?

It's simply a 1 ½ layer or ¾ inch of hot mix asphalt that protects the roads from showing signs of wear and tear, minor surface disintegration, and oxidation. The Ultra-Thin overlay is cost-effective and provides a beautifully strong pavement while improving rides, roads, and highways. The investment in the roadways reduces noise for drivers and the community.

Sometimes, the mixture combines recycled tires and other elements for the durability of the asphalt. The mix may also contain crude oil and additives that control cracking, fumes, and asphalt temperature.
