Nationwide Events in Ireland to celebrate UN International Day of Yoga on Midsummer's Day

On Sunday June 21st Irish people will join millions worldwide to celebrate the inaugural UN International Day of Yoga, which aims to raise awareness of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

To mark the day in Ireland, Midsummer Yoga for Palestine is a nationwide series of yoga events taking place around the country. People of all ages and levels of experience are invited to roll out their mats for a good cause and support Farashe Yoga, a non-profit Yoga centre based the West Bank city of Ramallah. Proceeds will go towards providing yoga teacher training, materials and outreach projects in the Palestinian West Bank.

Midsummer Yoga for Palestine is being organised by Limerick-based documentary maker and yoga teacher Muireann de Barra. Muireann recently produced a radio documentary, 'Freedom On The Mat' (Newstalk 106-108fm), about a group of women in the Occupied Palestinian West Bank who are using yoga to bring healing, empowerment and social change to communities and refugee camps throughout the West Bank.

Commenting on the events Muireann says:

“These events are about expressing solidarity and support for these Palestinian women, who have embraced yoga as a unique and accessible tool offering respite to themselves and others from the everyday stresses and trauma of living under Military Occupation.’

All events are hosted with the generous support of Yoga teachers and studios around the country, who volunteered to support this initiative and mark UN International Yoga Day in Ireland. Events include classes, workshops, kids yoga, taster classes to suit all ages and levels of experience in locations including Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Bantry, Ennis, Nenagh and Drogheda. All events are free with admission by donation.
