Snowboarder Lee Chae-woon Does not Participate in Big Air Due to Injury… Halfpipe Focus

Korean snowboarder Lee Chae-woon (Suri High School), who won a gold medal in slopestyle, his first event at the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics (Gangwon 2024), did not participate in the big air event he was scheduled to participate in.

An official from the Korea Ski Association said on the 27th, “Lee Chae-woon did not participate in today’s men’s big air preliminaries due to a slightly bad left ankle.”

Planned to participate in the Big Air preliminaries held at the Welli Hilli Park Ski Resort in Hoengseong, Gangwon-do on this day.

He had to be in the top 10 in the preliminaries to advance to the finals held on the 28th.

However, Lee Chae-woon chose not to participate in Big Air as he fell during training the day before and slightly sprained his left ankle.

A ski association official explained, “The condition is not serious, but we have decided to focus on recovery as the main event, the halfpipe, remains.”

Lee Chae-woon won the men’s snowboard halfpipe at the International Ski Federation (FIS) World Championships in March last year as the youngest person ever (16 years, 10 months), becoming the first Korean ski/snowboarder to win a world championships with a gold medal.

This season, he participated in the FIS World Cup and won a silver and a bronze medal in halfpipe.

Halfpipe is his main sport, but he also has the skills to compete at the world level in slopestyle and big air.

He placed 6th in the big air World Cup held in Beijing, China last month, so he was expected to win this competition as well, but unfortunately he failed to do so.

The halfpipe competition, the main event in which Lee Chae-woon will challenge for his second gold medal, will be held on the 1st of next month, the last day of the Gangwon 2024 Games.

Meanwhile, Choi Seo-woo (Yonghyeon Girls’ Middle School) participated in the snowboarding women’s big air preliminaries held at the same location on this day, but finished in 15th place and did not advance to the finals.
