ANI: Automatic Number Identification
ANI (Automatic Number Identification) is a service that provides the recipient of a phone call with the number of the calling phone. The service provider determines the method of providing this information (such as ATT, MCI, Sprint, etc.). Automatic Number Identification was originally developed to simplify the billing process for telephone operators, Rather than manually requesting the originating phone number for a phone call. The service is generally provided by sending DTMF (multi-frequency digital tone) tones along with the call. ANI was originally created by ATT Corporation for the purpose of internal long-distance charging. ANI is still used to manage the billing of free telephone lines, such as 1-800, 1-888, etc.
