Since ancient times, copying has been an integral part of research and development. Monks used quill pens and ink to copy every bit of literature to pass on information to the next generation.

The basic companion for the portable scanner is a laptop computer. Modern scanners use the power of a laptop to charge the scanner via a 2.0 USB connection. The scanner is approximately the same length as a 12-inch ruler. Some smaller models have dimensions of 2x2.5x12 inches. These scanners can be easily stuffed into a backpack, laptop bag, or attache case.

To facilitate document scanning, special software is installed on the host laptop. The scanner scans the document and either passes it over or channels it through the device. DCR (Digital Character Recognition), scans the document, and then sends the digital data back to the laptop. The software then converts it into an image that can be viewed on the monitor.

There are several factors to be aware of when selecting a portable document scanner.

High resolution - Provides a sharper scan and less blurring of copied documents
Variability in document size - A  CamScanner that can handle many different sizes and recognizes the differences
Sheet feeding mechanism – This allows the user to use the machine for sheet feeding.
Auto image correction – improves scan quality and removes blank pages. This feature allows you to collate copies of documents and automatically adjusts the copy according to the original's size.
Research can often require a lot of information that cannot easily be deleted from its storage. A portable document scanner is useful and can save time and money.
