Writing a cover letter that is effective can be more difficult than writing a resume. It can be difficult to write the headline or first sentence correctly. These headlines can be compared:

Who will make the first impression?

Your cover letter should not exceed one page. You can put the job title after the address and before your salutation. As an example, RE: Customer Service Manager Post-Dispatch 5/22/2011. The format, font size, margins and type paper should be the same as your resume.

Spend some time reviewing your work and looking for grammar errors. It should be sent flat and not folded in a 9x12 paper envelope. Paper clip the letter to your resume.

Always address the cover letter to a particular person. Never write "to it may concern" This is a form letter that will be quickly rejected.

Do your research about the employer. Discuss briefly how your skills might be of benefit to the employer. Remember that the cover letter does not need to be about you, but rather what you can do for the employer.
