What is Epiretinal Membrane?

Epiretinal membrane is a condition where a thin layer of scar tissue forms on the surface of the retina at the back of the eye. It can happen due to aging, eye trauma, or other factors. This scar tissue can cause problems with vision, such as blurriness or distortion. Sometimes, people may also have difficulty reading or see straight lines as wavy or bent. Doctors can diagnose it by examining the eye and using special imaging tests. Treatment options include monitoring the condition if it's mild or undergoing surgery to remove the scar tissue if it's causing significant vision problems. After surgery, vision may improve over time, but it may not fully return to normal. Rehabilitation and vision therapy may be recommended to help improve visual function.
