1/21/2022  COVID 🏥
It's important to understand how death rates are calculated for COVID-19.
Below, I explain how death rates were compared for COVID-19 for three groups:
Unvaccinated; fully vaccinated without booster; and fully vaccinated with booster.
Death rates were calculated as the number of deaths in each group, divided by the number of people in each group.
Death rates were given in deaths per 100,000 people in each group.
It would be wrong to say, for example, that since five people died in each group in a hospital, the hospital rates are the same for the general population.  To do the correct rate calculations, you have to know how many are in each of the three groups in the general population.
Weekly COVID-19 death rates in Switzerland on December 18, 2021
16.79 per 100,000 Unvaccinated
1.69 per 100,000   Fully vaccinated without booster
0.37 per 100,000  Fully vaccinated with booster

01/20/2022 FIRE SAFETY🔥
Apartment Fire Safety January 2022
Seattle Fire Department <fire@subscriptions.seattle.gov>
What the tragic NYC fire can teach us
On Sunday, January 9, 2022, a fire in a New York City high-rise apartment building killed 17 people, including eight children. This horribly tragic event is a grim reminder of the devastation that can occur from fires in residential buildings. The loss of life from major fires is always difficult and we want to share important fire safety information with our communities with the hope of preventing such tragedies.
Be safe with portable space heaters:
✴Give your portable heater at least three feet of clearance from all items.
✴Never use an extension cord with a portable heater. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet.
✴Turn off and unplug portable heaters before leaving the room or before going to bed.

We also learned from this fire that the apartment door where the fire started was left open after the residents fled the apartment. In addition, some exit doors did not self close which allowed for smoke to enter stairwells and hallways and spread throughout the building and made evacuating the building dangerous and deadly. Fire doors should never be propped open. An open fire door allows smoke to travel throughout a building or enter an exit stairwell. Most of the victims died from smoke inhalation, not fire, which is what kills most people in a fire.
What to do if a fire starts inside your apartment
If you can evacuate, do so immediately.
❇Leave your apartment if there is no smoke in the hallway.
❇Close the door behind you as you exit. This will contain the smoke and fire to your apartment and protect others on your floor.
❇Use the stairwell and go down if it is safe to do so. Pull the fire alarm as you exit if the building alarm is not sounding. Do not take the elevator to leave the building.
❇Go to your building’s outside meeting place and call 911 to report the fire.
❇Wait for instructions. Do not re-enter the building until given permission.
If you are unable to use the stairs or if smoke is blocking your exit, shelter in place:
✳Stay inside your apartment.
✳Keep your doors and windows closed.
✳Place a towel or clothing at the base of the door to keep smoke from entering.
✳Stay near a large window. Do not wait in a bathroom or balcony.
✳Call 911 if smoke comes into your apartment.
Early reports from this fire tell us that an electric space heater started the fire. While the details are not known as of this writing, we know that most fires involving space heaters start when items are placed too close to a space heater or when a space heater is plugged into an extension cord and not directly into the wall outlet.

1/12/2022 HEAT 🌞
WEBINAR: Excessive Heat and Human Health
> Youtube Video:

 (Presentation: 3:30 to 39:40)
Takeaways:
  • New extreme-heat forecasting tools are being tested in six locations, including Athens, Greece.
    • The tools forecast excess deaths from extreme heat
    • There are two models for extreme heat events,
one is for dry conditions and one is for humid conditions
    • Once the forecasting tools are working, Western Washington is a prime candidate.
  • The excess deaths from heat increases significantly as the heat wave goes beyond 3 days.
  • Climates with wider low and high temperature ranges are linked to higher death rates from extreme heat.
    • e.g. Extreme heat is more deadly in Chicago than in Singapore.
  • Mitigations can prevent a rise in excess deaths as extreme heat events increase in frequency.
    • Roof-top reflective surfaces are being tested and modeled
    • Poorer urban zones are heat sinks and benefit from more tree canopies.
    • Mitigations in rich neighborhoods are not needed so much.
    • 'Green' roof tops are labor intensive and not as effective as painting roofs white.
