Unibet CEO Petter Nylander

Who was detained by Dutch authorities Monday, will be extradited to France next week to face charges of violating French gambling laws according to several published reports.

Nylander was detained Monday after French court issued a European warrant for his arrest. The French court order stemmed from a complaint filed by French lottery company Francaise des Jeux and French horse-betting company PMU. Both are state-owned and accuse Unibet of violating laws that allow them to operate as a monopoly inside France.

The legal environment surrounding online gambling in France is uncertain. France has been ordered by the EU to open up its online sports-betting market. A French court ruled that France could not ban Maltese company from offering online wagers on horse racing. And the French government has indicated that it would like to liberalize online gambling laws.

But that hasn't stopped French authorities from acting. Last year, they arrested bwin executives for violating French gaming law. And earlier this year, they banned the Unibet team from participating in the Tour de France.
