Anyone can choose to be an artist, but only if he or she is dedicated enough. It’s a form of self-expression through a medium whether that’s two-dimensional, three-dimensional, or digital media. You can transition from an amateur artist to a professional artist, by developing your talent and exhibiting your work. Becoming a professional artist takes a big period and hard work, but eventually, it will be worth it to get paid to do what you love.

Here are a few important points to follow to grow as an artist:

  • Join an art academy:  Look online to find out which art schools are in your area, or which schools offer disciplines in the type of art you want to pursue. This is the most expected starting point for amateur artists who want to transition into professionals.
  • Attend workshops held by professional artists: Search local museums, art galleries, art schools, and studios to find out about chances to take art classes or attend workshops.  Many relevant clubs offer classes and workshops frequently, so you will likely be able to find several choices.

Taking advantage of these offerings will allow you to learn more about the type of art you want to pursue professionally, and will give you the possibility to rehearse and obtain feedback from professionals.

  • Improve your artistic skills: Practicing different art techniques and strengthening old techniques will help you hone your skills. Learn to see real-life objects which will allow you to create realistic paintings and drawings. Creating a schedule could help you track the hours you spend on certain pieces and how much you’re actually practicing too. Practice simple and familiar things to build some confidence.
  • Promote your art: Display your art in any possible medium, let it be an art gallery, studio, or online platform. Of course, the internet has made things easier. An online platform can give you more visibility. Try to be creative and don't be afraid to put yourself and your art out there – you never know what opportunity to exhibit your art might lead to a sale.
  • Quote your price: When you price your art, you need to be able to justify the amount. While your artwork is surely unique, so is every piece of original art. When you preferably start selling your art, you may have to sell it for less than what other established artists are selling their work for. After selling a few pieces, you can begin demanding more.
