Leaving on a jet plane’ is a sweet emotion but it comes with stipulations on baggage! One of the toughest decisions you will ever make as an international student on your way to studying in Australia is what to take with you and what to leave behind. But fret not! Here’s a list of the only things you need to carry with you for your college life down under.
1.OFFICIAL DOCUMENTATION
The only set of items in your packing list for Australia that are irreplaceable are your documents. These are your passport, visa, university offer letter, accommodation details, receipts of any payments made like tuition fee, the university required documents like mark sheets, certificates, etc., travel insurance, student health cover, and so on.
2.CASH AND CARDS
A little converted cash is sufficient to carry with you so don’t pack bundles of Australian dollars in your luggage! 1000 AUD is usually enough as most places in Australia accept cards. Other than cash, ensure your Indian bank credit/debit cards have international usage enabled in case you don’t have an Australian bank card just yet.
3.BASIC CLOTHING
Next on the list are clothes. Whether you’re a boy or a girl, stick to basics while packing. Have about 10-15 comfortable tees and casual shirts on your summer packing list for Australia along with 5-8 pairs of jeans/bottoms.1-2 heavyjackets, sweaters and warmers are enough for your winter packing list. Apart from these, two weeks’ worth of underthings and maybe 1 formal blazer and pants complete your packing list for clothes. Add a few of your favourite accessoriesand voila! you’ve taken the bull by the horns.
4.FOOTWEAR
A couple of comfortable casual/sports shoes in neutral colors, 1 formal shoe, a pair of comfy flip flops and one pair for special occasions, parties, etc. are the only footwear you need to carry. Once you’re in college, you can buy more using your student ID card as many brands offer student discounts in Australia.
5.MEDICAL ESSENTIALS
Make sure you add any specific medication you take or certain specific hygiene products you use to the list of things to pack for Australia. Also an emergency first aid kit is always a good idea to carry along. Since pharmacies adhere to different regulations in different countries, you’re better off carrying your basic medical needs with you.
6.BATH AND BODY ESSENTIALS
Not that there is any dearth of toiletries, make-up or razors in Australia, but just carry a small set of travel-size essentials to get you through the first few days especially if there are any particular items that you just cannot do without.
7.PRICELESS MEMORIES
When you’re going to be so far from home, there should be a few things around your new abode that remind you of your actual home. Bring a few memory-making items to display around your dorm room that will always give youthe comfort of being home.
8.ELECTRONIC ESSENTIALS
Needless to say, you would like to carry your personal laptop, tablet, headphones, earphones, hard drive, and any other devices you use regularly and rightly so. Apart from these, a travel adapter is a must. Other travel accessories like a small travel iron can come in handy for quick, frequent use.
9.HOBBIES
If you are fond of photography or love to swim or play guitar and have that special equipment for it without which you can’t pursue your hobby, bring it along! Even though these items can be purchased in Australia, it’s your comfort that cannot be bought so carry them with you.
10.FIRST DAY ESSENTIALS
Lastly, carry some items for immediate use upon arrival like a backpack, spare pen and notebook/diary may be an extra, smaller bag (whichever kind you prefer for when you are off-campus or travelling across the country), your favourite watch, sunglasses and anything else you think you might need immediately.
