Cleaning up cabinets and sideboards in your home with 5 easy-peasy steps

Make your work more efficient and fun with the 5S method. Everyone wants that of course: tidy, fresh and safe storage cabinets when they come back from vacation. The kind of place where you don't have to perform any superfluous actions, don't have to search and everything is easily within reach.

The 5S method is widely used worldwide to get and maintain an efficient wooden sideboard. It sounds like trendy management language, but in reality it has been used for decades, and possibly even longer.

In any case, the origin of the modern 5S method lies in Japan. These terms are usually translated as separating, sorting, cleaning, systematizing and maintaining to clean your sideboards perfectly.

How do you apply 5S?

S1: DIVORCE

To separate means to distinguish between useful and useless for storing in cabinets. All items in the workshop or office are assessed and everything that is not one hundred percent necessary has to go. Broken things, things that are unsafe or never used: get rid of them. With a broom with a broken handle, the choice is simple, but of course that does not apply to all objects. Therefore, make sure that the 'owner' is found and let him or her decide what needs to be done. Objects without an owner are given a red sticker and are placed in a central place for an agreed time, for example a month. If it has not been claimed or used during that time, it can be agreed that everyone will be given another week after that. After that, the object will disappear permanently.

S2: SORT

After throwing it away, it comes clean up nicely. Here too, the actual users of the materials must have a say. Successful cleanup stands or falls with the support of the users.

In this step it's all about good labelling, convenient storage and, above all, putting it back in the right place i.e., cabinets and sideboards. A well-known example is the tool board with the outline of the tool. At a glance you can see what is available and what is missing. A well-stocked workshop prevents searching for tools. And those ten minutes of searching a day add up to a whole working week over a whole year! Not to mention the frustration and distraction that the search causes.

S3: CLEANING

When everything superfluous has been thrown away and everything is in the right storage cabinet, there is a thorough cleaning of the workplace. Floors, walls, machines, equipment, racks and archives: everything has to be tackled to start with a clean slate. So get out a cleaning cloth or cleaning paper and clean everything thoroughly. This step also tackles the root cause of pollution, such as leaking oil pipes, poorly draining countertops and accumulating dishes.

S4: STANDARDIZE

Everything that has been achieved in the first three steps must be secured. Rules and protocols are laid down for cleaning of storage cabinets, because it has to be done time and again. Place a clear label with the contents on filing cabinets and drawers, so that no unnecessary actions have to be performed. Also label or label your orders, folders, storage bins, parts bins, etc. so that you never miss a thing. Clearly define work areas: clean – dirty, in – out. For example, use emphatic colors and indications. In this step, people are required to let go of old habits and stay neatly within the lines. That requires a lot of discipline.

S5: HOLD OUT

Finally, it is checked whether the employees do not fall into old habits. This can be done, for example, through checklists or periodic refreshments. Motivation is also of great importance here. For example, publish monthly results that show how much more effective the work has become. But also think of an increase in job satisfaction or improved safety. This step also means keeping the protocols established in step 4 up to date. After all, new tools are also being added. Or a new production method changes the work process. It is important to incorporate those changes into the 5S work process. While the first four steps can be completed, the fifth step is an ongoing process for cleaning your sideboards. Only by being completely committed to this step can you get the optimal results.

Conclusion:

We really hope 5S method helps you in cleaning the sideboards and cabinets properly in every way. Happy cleaning to you!!
