Letter Renouncing Israeli Citizenship by Nadav Gazit

Renunciation of Israeli Citizenship

To Whom It May Concern at the Israeli Population and Immigration Authority:

As I am finalizing this letter on November 6, 2023, the state of Israel-and those it empowers to do so-has already committed countless atrocities in the last month alone, bombing hospitals', schools", and churches" and killing thousands of Palestinians. However, this is but a singular moment in time that represents the decades of sheer brutality and inhumanity of the Zionist project to colonize Palestine. This is a clear continuation of the theft of Palestinian land and the ongoing ethnic cleansing and genocide of the Palestinian people since 1948-and before.

I grew up in an Israeli Zionist household, and I cannot put into words the shame I have for my own family's history of Zionist violence. And while my family celebrated its history, I was also kept ignorant by the State and its educational system by purpose. So, it is important to set the record straight: Zionism, which emerged in the 1800s, is an unethical, immoral, and simply evil settler-colonial project, held together by lies, racism, propaganda, and the support of world superpowers with their own interests in the oil-rich region. It is not, in fact, a "safe haven" for Jews. We see this in the way the government, led by genocidal fascist criminal Netanyahu, is willing to kill Israeli hostages (as well as UN staff) while bombarding Gaza. We see it in the way that Israel treats Israeli Holocaust survivors, a third of whom live below the poverty line and must choose

between food and other basic necessities at times,xx

The specific use of the Holocaust as an excuse to commit the atrocities that Israel commits is beyond shameful. Especially considering the fact that before the formation of the state of Israel, Zionists collaborated with Nazis to further their plans to colonize Palestine and worked with Nazi officials as high up as Eichmann himself. Zionists even helped Nazis eliminate non- or anti-Zionist Jews who were fighting against the Nazis, fascism, and antisemitism, as they were a hindrance to the Zionist effort. This should not surprise anyone who has seen Netanyahu absolve Hitler himself from the killing of Jews, alleging that he only did so under request from the Grand Mufti. Zionists are constantly fabricating stories to manufacture a false history-and, as we have witnessed so clearly in the recent genocidal barrage of Gaza and the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank, a false present as well.

Living in Israel I saw how well the manufacturing of history and the dehumanization of Palestinians worked to create a society and culture that celebrates and demands the death of Palestinians. Palestinians, who call for freedom from occupation, are being portrayed as wanting to enact genocide by chanting "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," a chant that represents liberation from occupationxiv. However it is Israelis and Zionists who not only use fascist, genocidal rhetoricxxxvi, but also materially make it so: enacting pogroms, enforcing enclosures and blockades, turning off power and water supplies to millions**, demolishing homes, and ethnic cleansing as the entire world has seen time and time again and especially in this bloody, ruthless campaign to eviscerate Gaza we have now seen. The surgeon Ghassan Abu Sitta, who has been working tirelessly in Gaza with countless wounded, correctly framed this as such: "We are facing a killing machine masquerading as a state. "xx

Since leaving Israel, I have learned a lot and developed an understanding of the ways in which the Israeli state collaborates worldwide with oppressive forces. I was lucky enough to be exposed to information that helped me unlearn the Zionist propaganda that was carefully instilled into me since childhood. And once you unlearn that propaganda, there is no going back. There are so many stories, photos, footage, and articles | could point to that would fill out endless pages. That is why Israel is so terrified of this moment in time, because the lies and propaganda simply cannot counter the overwhelming truth.

I grew up and lived in Tel Aviv until I was 23. When I was 12, I came to understand that I am an atheist. This further grew into fighting people who would call me Jewish because I wasn't religious or just did not feel any genuine connection to Judaism. I couldn't get far enough away from being. thought of as Jewish. But since I've been extracting the poison that is Zionism from me, I have felt closer and closer to Judaism, Jewish culture, and to my fellow anti-Zionist Jews. I have reclaimed my Jewishness. And I would like to make it abundantly clear that anyone who dares to use my existence to justify Israel's existence and actions does not-and will not ever-speak in my name. I am proud to be an anti-Zionist Jew, and I can promise you this: I will be an anti-Zionist Jew until my last dying breath.

Every moral and ethical part of my bones, flesh, and soul leaves me with only one viable option: to unequivocally renounce my Israeli citizenship.
