Job Interview Attire Tips for Beginners

Grooming plays an important role in Job Interviews. One most popular line "The First Impression is the Last Impression" is relatable here. But deciding what to wear is often stressful. In an interview not only your preparation matters but also how you present yourself. For example, a pair of casual shoes for men is not a good idea for an interview.

Interview attire tips for men

  • Wear a solid coloured suit with a full sleeve shirt that contrasts well with the suit.
  • The shirt can be of a solid colour or have subtle strips with minimum spread collar and barrel cuff.
  • Generally, a black or brown leather belt is advisable. A less simple watch with a metallic or leather strap.
  • The colour of your shoes must match the colour of your belt. Remember to wear conservative leather shoes and not casual shoes for men. Black shoes are highly appreciated. You can also choose a brown shoe.
  • A formal striped tie goes well with suits.
  • Take a pair of dark coloured socks generally, black, and grey.
  • Neatly trimmed nails, clean save, and proper hairstyle is mandatory.
  • Carry your portfolio or a briefcase.

Female interview attire tips

  • Let it be a dark coloured shirt with a coordinated blouse. The skirt can be just below or above the knee.
You can wear a formal salwar kameez, or a saree as well.
  • Wear comfortable and formal shoes, bellies, moccasins, or sandals. The colour of it should match the belt if any, and the purse you carry.
  • Limited pieces of jewellery, business makeup and professional hairstyles are allowed.

Before you reach the interview location, make sure your attire fits the dress code of the company. Spend an hour to make them ready a night before the interview date. Polish your shoes properly.

Once you complete the interview and reach home, immediately send the attire for dry cleaning. This allows you to maintain

the fabric for a long time and fits your grooming standards for the next interview.

Things you should avoid wearing during an interview -

1. Flip flops, open-toed sandals, and athletic shoes
2. Avoid wedding tank tops or shirts having thin straps and shorts. Don't let your underwear stick out from your clothing.
3. Avoid wearing too short dresses or skirts, and low necklines shirts.
4. Don't use perfumes or cologne that can distract the interviewer.

Always remember these tips and be confident to face an interview.
