Why Timers Are Good For Your Classroom

time

My first year teaching was difficult. The management of my classroom was a mess and my students were not in a position to be independent. Then, I went on to teach for the past few years. Now I teach first grade. I put the focus on teaching students to become self-sufficient problem solvers. My classroom is more efficient and my students are happier.

1.Supporting

Timers help students set specific expectations for managing their time. Through modeling and practice students will become more self-sufficient. Timers can provide a visual aid to help students meet the time-based expectations. Timers help the teacher uphold the specified time and stay focused. Students become aware of the time to finish their work, and the timer can create a sense of enthusiasm for students.

2. The Future and Life Skills

It doesn't matter if it's always easy or not, deadlines and deadlines are aspect of our lives. My first graders are mature and responsible when I provide timer online. For instance I have had many times when students in my class have let me know that an alarm clock has been paused, when there are the x amount of minutes remaining or when there is a need for more time. My students are thrilled to request extra time and I find it very satisfying. Students are able to request more time and the timer also lets students understand when work is expected to close. My students are also doing their best at the tasks which are compulsory (must do) immediately in order to move on to choice center items. The use of timer countdown has taught me invaluable life lessons. Responsibility, independence, and the notion of time.

3. Borders

Timers establish clear boundaries in the classroom. It's work time when the timer goes on. The timer's expiration signals the start of a transition. Students know that when the timer is on there is a specific job or task to be completed. They can ask for support or even extra time when required, but it is helpful to label and define the time , so that it is never unclear how much time there is to spend on something.

4. Community

A healthy classroom community is vital for life-long learning and academic success. I've found that using timers and building more independent students has helped create an environment that is more social in my class. My students now are more aware of time. They know when they need more time to complete an assignment and then ask for assistance from me or from a fellow student, as appropriate. My students solve issues in a variety of ways. My students are accountable for their actions and work. My students are aware of their peers and are able to provide assistance when needed. The words accountability, independence, etc may seem large however they can be achieved in the elementary school setting provided the proper support. My students are extremely responsible and respect each other.

Establish a sense of community and culture in your class. Classroom independence is built. Set the standards and the routines you wish for your students.
