1. What is Gabapentin?

Gabapentin (Neurontin) is a prescription drug used to treat seizures, nerve pain, restless leg syndrome, fibromyalgia, and neuropathic pain. It works by blocking certain chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. These chemicals help transmit messages between nerves. Gabapentin may also work by reducing inflammation in the body.

2. How does Gabapentin Work?
Gabapentin reduces nerve impulses in the brain by binding to specific receptors. This helps reduce symptoms associated with epilepsy, including seizures. It also relieves nerve pain caused by diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, and central pain caused by spinal cord injury.

3. How Long Does Gabapentin Last?
The effects of gabapentin last about 24 hours after taking a dose. You should take it at least two hours before bedtime to avoid daytime sleepiness.

4. Side Effects of Gabapentin
Side effects of gabapentin include dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, itching, fatigue, confusion, depression, anxiety, trouble sleeping, weight gain, and blurred vision. If these side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor.

5. Warning About Gabapentin
Do not use gabapentin if you have kidney disease, liver problems, low blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid conditions, or psychiatric disorders. Do not use gabapentine if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Do not breastfeed while using gabapentin.
