What Is the Method of Weathering Asphalt Shingles?

The word "weathering" or "ageing" is used to explain the impact of the elements on your Asphalt shingles over time. If you find symptoms of weathering, this does not necessarily mean you have broken shingles because this is a normal phenomenon that can occur over the course of your roof's lifetime. Remember that the shingles can exhibit signs of wear and tear over time, no matter how advanced or robust they are. Any of these influences, however, may influence how quickly they display signs of weathering:

1. Shingle Goodness.
Your roofing contractor will inform you that the shingle condition you choose will have a significant impact on how long your roofing materials last. Poor-quality shingles can exhibit signs of weathering even sooner than top-grade shingles. Keep in mind that consistency varies from one maker to the next, often within the same product line. As a result, rigorous testing is needed before selecting a roofing material.

2. The weather.
The local climate is another important aspect that influences shingle weathering. If you live in an environment where weather extremes occur often, you can expect the shingles to exhibit signs of weathering sooner, as the elements can hasten problems such as thermal cycling, which can lead to asphalt shingle corrosion.

3. Slope of the roof.
Since flat roofs lose moisture at a slower pace than sloped roofs, they usually have a shorter lifetime. They're even more vulnerable to UV radiation than roofs with steeper slopes since a larger region is directly exposed to the sun.
