The fallopian tubes carry out an important role in pregnancy because they are where most eggs are fertilized. To become pregnant, every stage of the human reproduction process must occur as it should - from the release of a mature egg to fertilization and eventually implanting in the uterus. Open fallopian tubes and a normal uterus play a very important role in this process. Infertility is often caused by blocked or damaged fallopian tubes. Pregnancy is impossible if both tubes are fully obstructed owing to adhesions or scar tissue around them. Although it is possible to get pregnant if the fallopian tubes are partly obstructed by adhesions, the chance of misplaced (ectopic) pregnancy rises. In such cases, your doctor might recommend in vitro fertilization (IVF) if treatment is possible.
Fertility is not affected if one fallopian tube is blocked as the egg can still travel through the unaffected fallopian tube. Fertility medicines may increase the likelihood of ovulation in a healthy fallopian tube.
