Ki & Ka (2016) was released at a time when many societal issues were being openly questioned, ridiculed, and redefined. One such issue was the role of men and women in a family. Directed by R. Balki, this romantic comedy movie dealt with this serious subject in an easy tone that was often applauded for its bravery in attempting to broach a topic never before tackled by Bollywood.

Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s pairing brought a freshness to the screen that was reminiscent of their characters in the movie. Mr. Bachchan made a brief, star-studded appearance, as did Ms. Bachchan. Their roles were in a role reversal mode, and how that affected them and others around them was apparent in the film.

One of the prime highlights of this movie was the dialogues. The dialogues were a huge hit then as they are now. Some of those dialogues that challenged the norms of our system are cited below: -

“Main apni maa jaisa banna chahta hoon”

(I want to become just like my mom)

Kabir is a son who misses his mom. His dad is mostly submerged in his work schedules. Kabir has always felt that his mom who was a regular housewife taking care of the household chores and family members has always been undermined. He believes that his mom’s job was no less than his dad's and that’s why he wants to become like his mom. When he delivers this dialogue, Kia’s jaws drop!

“Mera maqsad mehnat se bachna nahi ... meri mehnat faltu maqsad se bachke rehna hai”

(My goal is not to stay away from hard work ... I work hard to stay away from useless goals)

Once again Kabir delivers a dialogue that will make you think. As well-educated people, each one of us is goal-oriented but Kabir is an exception. He says he is educated so that he can put his energies and time into something fulfilling and not into a rat race. Only someone as evolved as Kabir can say that!

“Ghar sambhale to Ki, Bahar jaake kaam kare to Ka, according to Bhartiya Sabhyata”

(Ki is only meant to take care of the home while Ka is supposed to go outside and earn a livelihood as per our Indian traditions)

Kabir delivers a sixer with this strong and bold dialogue. He says this dialogue in a sarcastic tone questioning the conservatives. Kabir questioned the age-old system where the guys of the family have to earn and the women have to sit inside. Things have changed drastically but still, there is visible gender disparity.

“Husband nahi ye meri wife banna chahta hai”

(Not my husband, he wants to become my wife)

This is a moment where Kabir is meeting his would-be mother-in-law who is an open-minded and well-established person. In general, the family of the girl asks about the financial stability of a guy when he comes to discuss marriage. But as Kabir is very clear that he wants to take care of the home, so, Kia refers to him as her “wife” and not “husband”.

“Agar ye aapke business take over karke society mein aapka sar uncha karta to aapke liye ye mard hota par aurat ke liye mard woh hota hai joh jaanta hai ki woh mard hai ... woh nahi jisse apni chaddi ke andar ki cheez par vishvas kam ho ... aur usse cheek cheekar duniya ko batana pade ... ki main mard hoon, main mard hoon, main mard hoon”

(If he would have taken the charge of your company then he would have been a Man for you but for a woman a man is someone who knows he is a man ... and not someone who is not confident of what's inside his pants ... and he has to shout it out to the world that ... I'm a man, I'm a man, I'm a man)

This is a wonderful moment when Kia goes to meet Kabir’s dad where Kabir introduces Kia as his would-be wife. Mr. Bansal, Kabir’s dad insults Kabir again saying he is not a man as he is planning to be Kia’s wife and not the husband – the bread earner. In reply to those taunts, Kia delivers this dialogue that wins our hearts.
