W Global Brand Design and Rockwell Group Europe (RGe), led by Diego Gronda, Managing and Creative Director, collaborated on the design of W Paris - Opéra. RGe is the Madrid office of David Rockwell's New York-based Rockwell Group, which he created over 25 years ago. Rockwell Group's projects around the world demonstrate the company's capacity to understand global brands while creating immersive, experiential, locally relevant environments, including the 81st and 82nd Annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles, the Juana Manso complex in Buenos Aires, and Wasabi by Morimoto restaurant in Mumbai.
Since the debut of the first W hotel, W New York, in 1998, which was designed by Rockwell Group, design has remained at the forefront of W Hotels.
W Paris - Opéra will undoubtedly become a lively landmark in the city, since it is located directly across the street from the iconic Opéra Garnier. The hotel was designed to establish a dynamic relationship between the historic façade of the building, Paris as the City of Light, and W's DNA by infusing a sense of vitality into the iconic Parisian area, which was inspired by The Spark's creative vision.
According to Eva Ziegler, Global Brand Leader, W Hotels Worldwide and Le Méridien, "bringing the W brand to Paris will mark a true milestone in W's global growth into the world's most dynamic and vibrant places." Unique lifestyle programming in a cutting-edge designed setting will give Parisians and visitors alike a new and unique experience.
"We wanted to provide guests with an outstanding experience of the light and sophistication evident all throughout this great city for the first W Hotel in Paris," stated RGe's Diego Gronda. "Our design is inspired by the beauty, wealth, and radiance of Paris, La Ville Lumière, while also incorporating New York's contemporary cool and free-spirited vitality."
The hotel's architecture is centered on a large backlit digital undulating wall that runs through the public and private areas and identifies the building's central core. The spark will appear in the form of a dotted pattern that resembles abstract clouds. This wall will be tuned to a variety of tempos to generate varied moods to match the season, event, time of day, and position within the hotel, bringing the old structure to life with a gleaming brightness. The elevators, DJ booth, and stairwells will all be painted red to give the impression of being within an energetic hub.
Parts of the 19th-century structure, such as ornate columns, vaulted ceilings, marble staircases, and fireplaces, have been partially repaired, honored, and frequently juxtaposed with contemporary components. To preserve the building's history, the original stained glass windows and mosaic flooring on the second floor will be preserved.
The 91 contemporary guest rooms in the five-story hotel will include 20 suites and two Extreme WOW Suites (W s interpretation of the Presidential Suite). The guest rooms and suites include soaring ceilings of up to three and a half meters, a contemporary, roomy design, and spectacular views of the Opéra Garnier and Parisian streets.
