Finnish lottery monopoly Beikaus recently conducted a survey on the prevalence of gambling addiction in the country in 2021. Results published in the latest casino news show a significant drop in problem gambling rates.
Veikkaus conducted a survey interviewing 5003 respondents aged 15 to 74 between August and November 2021. The study found 75,000 people had problematic gambling behavior in the fall of 2021, accounting for 1.8% of the total population. Between November 2020 and November 2021, the proportion of problematic gamblers and gambling addicts decreased by 0.8%. Veikkaus reported that the main reasons for the decline in problematic gambling rates were:
Accidental game supply cut due to COVID-19 pandemic impact;
Focuses on responsible gambling and imposes strict restrictions on games of chance, such as mandatory certification for various games, loss restrictions, etc.
At the same time, 59% of respondents confessed that they had gambled in the past 12 months, up 9.2% from 2020.
The most problematic areas of gambling in Finland include:
online casino games (21%);
existing slots (18%);
Offshore slots and other online games (15%).
For the first time, online gambling overtook traditional slot machines, and iGames (36%) were the most common among people aged 35-49.
