Are you the one amongst the many people that feel inspired to start running now and then, but somehow never end up doing it? Are you having one of those driven days today and you cannot wait to finally just dive right into the runner’s life? If you nodded to all these questions, you are spot-on as you are reading just the right thing.

As someone who has spent way too much time thinking about running than running, I can guarantee you that all you need to do is push yourself in the right direction with a little bit of guidance. Read on to know all the hacks you need for your very first run.

  1. Grab your best pair of running shoes and running clothes.

One of the first things to do if you have decided to make running a permanent part of your life is to get shoes that fit you properly. You must get shoes that are specifically made for running, and not for any other activity because they may then cause unavoidable injuries.

Secondly, select your most comfortable activewear. Make sure that your running clothes are not too tight, or too loosely fitting and simply perfect for free movement.

  1. Set a realistic duration and distance for your first run.

The main reason a lot of amateur runners burn out quickly is nothing but unrealistic expectations about their first few performances. While it is healthy to be ambitious, this enthusiasm should be a sustainable one. Take your first couple of runs slow. Set a time and distance that you think you can easily cover. Let yourself take as many breaks as your body requires. Remember that your body is in constant communication with you- so pay attention. Try alternating between walking and running to maintain the energy levels.

  1. Plan an appropriate and achievable schedule.

Once you have decided to kick-start your runner’s life, be prepared to ace it. Make a schedule incorporating whatever period you want to run for. It may be only 10 minutes on the first few days, but that is completely fine. The important thing is that your schedule is achievable, flexible and one that helps you maintain consistency. Remember to not make a super-packed schedule that will make you feel guilty for missing a run or two occasionally. Instead, include ample rest period to not drain yourself out.

  1. Pre-run Routine

This is a step that most people ignore initially. Even when you are feeling extremely motivated, do not go straight into running before completing this step. The pre-run routine includes your pre-run meals, and pre-run workouts and stretching. Eat a small protein-packed meal or drink something that has proven to give you the energy you need. Otherwise, you may burn out mid-run. Next, do your stretching. This is important to prepare your muscles for the run. Skip this and feel the wrath of sore muscles after your run.

  1. Hydrate

Drink ample water – not too much, not too little. Hydrate your body before, during and after your run.

  1. Location

Pick a location that is peaceful and can accommodate good running. Avoid busy streets and dark lanes. Go for a well-lit, airy, green and scenic route for your first run. If you are planning to run on a treadmill, make sure your room temperatures are comfortable and there is enough ventilation.

  1. Figure out your pace

This is often a challenging task for most beginners. The key is to take your time to set a pace that you are comfortable with. Experts suggest that your running pace and breathing pattern should be such that you should be able to retain a normal conversation with someone while you run.

  1. Post-run Cool Down

This step is as important as your pre-run routine. Work out a proper cool-down method to ease yourself out of your run. Never stop abruptly and get on with your day. Incorporate walking slowly and stretching to regulate your body’s activity level. Stopping abruptly can cause shock to your muscles and cramp them up.

Voila, you are all set to get that gear and take the plunge of a beginning a new life as a runner. Above everything, you are sure to enjoy your first run.
