The authors of Cochrane Oral Health performed this review and the evidence is up to date to November 10, 2017. We included research in which individual patients had received oral hygiene advice from a dental professional individually in a dental clinic with a minimum follow-up of 8 weeks.
In total, in the 19 studies identified, oral hygiene advice was provided by a hygienist in eight studies, a dentist in four studies, a dental nurse in one study, a dentist or hygienist in one study, a dental nurse and a dental hygienist in one study, and oral hygiene counselling by a dental nurse to the control group with more self-administration of the intervention in one study. In three of the studies, it was not clear which member of the dental team performed the procedure. More than half of the studies (10 of 19) were conducted in a hospital setting, including only five in a general dentist's office (where the majority of oral hygiene advice is given).
