The park is located on the west bank of the Susquehanna River and includes two historic structures: Herrington House and Fifer's Castle. The park is named for Colonel Thomas Herrington who built his home in 1785 at this site overlooking the river. It remains today as one of Harford County's most significant landmarks, along with nearby Fort Bowyer (built during World War II), which was listed on National Register of Historic Places in 1973 as part of an expansion effort by local preservation groups to include more than just buildings within city limits.
