The Evolution of Mold and Molding Techniques

It’s surprising to learn that almost every item of daily use has been made using the same method of manufacturing. It’s molding that has made possible the creation of a variety of products of daily use. Plastic injection molding has allowed producing many objects – ranging from simple toothbrushes and hair clips to large complex items such as high-end electric presses. Therefore, it is quite interesting to learn about plastic injection molding methods and how various methods of molding have changed the world today.

Although changes in techniques have been observed, the basic principle remains the same and applies to all plastic molding methods. In general, plastic is melted down and injected into the mold. After cooling down, the plastic hardens and takes the desired shape. For cooling down, a coolant is passed through around the mold to let the plastic harden. After cooling and hardening, the formed part is ejected from the mold through ejection process. With the modern molding techniques, the ejected part doesn’t require secondary processing thus saving cost and time.

With time, the molding technology has changed a lot. Initially, the available forms of plastics were very difficult to work with. As the need for more malleable form arose, several types of materials were invented and developed. Consequently, molding methods were also developed. Nowadays, manufacturers prefer custom tool parts to create mold designs that can help in mass production, even when highly intricate parts have to be formed.

A major change in the industry has been in the types of materials used. There are larger than ever varieties of plastics that can be used in the injection molding process. These plastics have different qualities that make them highly desirable for certain applications to make intricate parts. Nowadays, molding even allows adding two or more materials to the plastic to form durable parts. Coloring the plastic has become easier and thus the industry is flourishing due to the versatility offered by molding.

More complicated molds are available these days. From intricate cosmetic cap mould to simple cap molds, computer assisted manufacturing technology has changed the molding world completely. Accuracy and precision in mold making has increased, leading to mass productions, qualitatively and affordably. Complicated molds with multiple sections have transformed the manufacturing industry as it eliminates the need for secondary finishing thus keeping the production costs low.

Molding has become one of the most important manufacturing techniques as products of everyday use at home or work are created using different methods of molding.
