Earlier this month, Seneca Nation of Indians surprised many when it made a surprise announcement on a new casino project. So did Anthony Selini, supervisor of Thompson Town, New York, where the casino is scheduled to be built.
Antony Selini learned about Seneca casino plans through the media in the same way as most other tribes. Selini had already negotiated several contracts with two other Indigenous tribes affected by the federal ban last year. He is somewhat unhappy with Seneca's surprise plan, and believes the casino cannot be built without consulting first.
Selini isn't the only one who was surprised, either, because Mohawk chiefs didn't know about the plan. Mohawk chiefs were once considered leaders of the Catskills Casino Initiative, but in January, Interior Secretary Dirk A. Kemson's application was rejected. Mohawk Chief Barbara Razor recently released a statement wishing Seneca good luck and explaining the difficulties facing Mohawk chiefs to take over the Sullivan County casino, which has not yet been approved. According to some Seneca reports, the new Seneca casino is actually a joint venture with Michigan-based startup Rotation Black Gaming, which was also never discussed in Seneca territory by Seneca Gaming Corporation, the tribal gambling arm.
