Æthelstan was King of the Anglo-Saxons from 924 to 927 and King of the English from 927 to his death in 939 and he was thirty years old when he came to the throne in 924.

Æthelstan became the first king of all the Anglo-Saxon peoples, and in effect overlord of Britain and he is regarded as the first King of England by modern historians.

Æthelstan was one of the first kings to write laws and enforce them. The first two laws were about paying money to the church, and making sure the poor were given money.

Modern historians regard him as the first King of England and one of the "greatest Anglo-Saxon kings" Æthelstan defeated a combined army of Scots, Celts, Danes and Vikings, claiming the title of King of all Britain.

 

Æthelstan enforced the duty of charity on Æthelstan's local officials, specifying the amount to be given to the poor effectively establishing social welfare.
