Easter Sunday 2020
Welcome- Clare Leighton
Opening Song
We say sorry
Lord, Mary wasn’t expecting to see you that morning in the garden,
so, she mistook you for a gardener.
We confess that so often we do not expect to see you,
and we make mistakes.
We see what we expect to see,
and do not look beyond that.
Forgive us Lord and open our eyes.
Lord the disciples didn’t understand what they saw, so they went back home; only Mary waited.
Sometimes we do not understand.
We give up halfway, we run away,
we retreat to what we know.
Forgive us Lord and open our eyes.
This is the good news:
the tomb is empty, sin is powerless,
death is defeated forever.
On this very first day, and every day,
we walk as God’s people,
forgiven and made whole.
Thanks be to God.
Amen.
Collect
In the depth of our isolation we cry to you, Lord God:
give light to our darkness and bring us out of the prison of our despair;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen
Bible Reading Exodus 12: 21-28 - David Somerville
21 Then Moses sent for all the elders of Israel. He said to them, “Go at once. Choose the animals for your families. Each family must kill a Passover lamb. 22 Get a branch of a hyssop plant. Dip it into the blood in the bowl. Put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you can go out of the door of your house until morning. 23 The Lord will go through the land to strike down the Egyptians. He’ll see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe. He will pass over that house. He won’t let the destroying angel enter your homes to strike you down.
24 “Obey all these directions. It’s a law for you and your children after you for all time to come. 25 The Lord will give you the land, just as he promised. When you enter it, keep this holy day. 26 Your children will ask you, ‘What does this holy day mean to you?’ 27 Tell them, ‘It’s the Passover sacrifice to honor the Lord. He passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt. He spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’ ” Then the Israelites bowed down and worshiped. 28 They did just what the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron.

Gospel Reading John 20: 1-18 - The Henry Family + Rev Cathy Milford
20 Early on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb. It was still dark. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the entrance. 2 So she ran to Simon Peter and another disciple, the one Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb! We don’t know where they have put him!”
3 So Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. 4 Both of them were running. The other disciple ran faster than Peter. He reached the tomb first. 5 He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there. But he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came along behind him. He went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there. 7 He also saw the funeral cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place. It was separate from the linen. 8 The disciple who had reached the tomb first also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.
Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene
11 But Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she cried, she bent over to look into the tomb. 12 She saw two angels dressed in white. They were seated where Jesus’ body had been. One of them was where Jesus’ head had been laid. The other sat where his feet had been placed.
13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”
“They have taken my Lord away,” she said. “I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 Then she turned around and saw Jesus standing there. But she didn’t realize that it was Jesus.
15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?”
She thought he was the gardener. So she said, “Sir, did you carry him away? Tell me where you put him. Then I will go and get him.”
16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”
She turned toward him. Then she cried out in the Aramaic language, “Rabboni!” Rabboni means Teacher.
17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me. I have not yet ascended to the Father. Instead, go to those who believe in me. Tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”
18 Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news. She said, “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Talk - Rev Chris Chorlton
We affirm our faith
Do you believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist?
We believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again?
We believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in all the world?
We believe and trust in him.
This is the faith of the Church.
This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Song - Christ the Lord is Risen Today
(Words on the screen)
Holy Communion
With this bread that we bring
We shall remember Jesus
With this wine that we bring
We shall remember Jesus
The Lord is risen!
He is risen indeed alleluia!
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give him thanks and praise.
Why is it right to give thanks and praise?
Listen, and we will hear.
Lord of all life, you created the universe,
where all living things reflect your glory.
You give us this great and beautiful earth,
to discover and to cherish.
You give us your love, even when things go wrong.
Jesus knew hurt and pain.
Through him you wipe away our tears, and fill us with yur peace.
You made us all, each wonderfully different,
to join with the angels and sing your praise:
Holy, holy, holy is the Lord,
holy is the Lord God almighty:
holy, holy, holy is the Lord,
holy is the Lord God almighty:
who was, and is, and is to come;
holy, holy, holy is the Lord.
We thank you, loving Father,
because, when we turned away, you sent Jesus, your Son.
He gave his life for us on the cross and shows us the way to live.
Send your Holy Spirit that these gifts of bread and wine
may be for us Christ's body and his blood.
Why do we share this bread and wine?
Listen, and we will hear.
On the night before he died, when darkness had fallen,
Jesus took bread.
He gave thanks, broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying:
'This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me.'
After they had eaten, he took the cup of wine,
gave thanks, and shared it with his disciples, saying:
'This is my blood, poured out for you and for many,
for the forgiveness of sins.'
So Father, with this bread and this cup
we celebrate his love, his death, his risen life.
As you feed us with these gifts, send your Holy Spirit,
and change us more and more to be like Jesus our Saviour.
How do we follow Jesus Christ?
All: Listen, and we will hear.
Help us, Father, to love one another,
as we look forward to that day when suffering is ended,
and all creation is gathered in your loving arms.
And now with all your saints we give you glory,
through Jesus Christ, in the strength of the Spirit,
today and for ever.
All: Amen.
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
The priest breaks the communion bread
President:
Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you,
and his blood which he shed for you.
Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving.
Prayer after Communion
Step out into the day,
into resurrection light.
Feel the joy that new life brings,
accept the peace that it offers,
and share the love that it gives.
Amen.
The one who died is risen!
The one who bowed down is lifted up!
The one nailed to a cross is enthroned on high!
The one who gave his all is Lord of all.
Alleluia! Amen!!
May God’s goodness strengthen us.
May God’s mercy comfort us.
May God’s promise of eternal life inspire us with hope and love.
And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among us and remain with us always.
All: Amen.
Song - Thine be the Glory
Thine is the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son;
endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won.
Angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
kept the folded grave-clothes where Thy body lay.
Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son;
endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won.
Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb.
Lovingly He greets us, scatters fear and gloom;
let His church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,
for the Lord now liveth; death hath lost its sting.
Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son;
endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won.
No more we doubt Thee, glorious Prince of life!!
Life is nought without Thee; aid us in our strife;
make us more than conqu'rors, through Thy deathless love;
bring us safe through Jordan to Thy home above.
Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son;
endless is the vict'ry Thou o’er death hast won
Notices & Dismissal
